| Canis TempusÕQuixote Unique environmental staging effectively turns the Portuguese Association upside down! A new live theatre production inspired by the life of Miguel de Cervantes and his classic work, Don Quixote, will have its premiere at the Portuguese Association, (4170 St-Urbain). A total of 17 performances are scheduled between August 19th and September 6th. The Canis Tempus production of Quixote was first developed as part of a workshop last January out at John Abbott College. The show has been expanded during the summer and moved downtown for a complete three-week run. All but one of the original four-member cast will reprise their initial roles in the production. The current group of performers includes: Ashley Dunn, Chris Nachaj, Anne-Marie Saheb and Chris Wilding. According to Artistic Director Andrew Cuk, Quixote offers a unique guarantee. ÒLiterally every seat is a front row seat,Ó he said. Cuk is referring to his companyÕs clever use of the Portuguese AssociationÕs particular architecture: the audience will watch the show from a balcony, looking down on the action. Cuk insists that his show is not a retelling of the Don Quixote novel. ÒItÕs definitely not Man of La Mancha, he said. Instead, Quixote uses everything from customized masks to a wall of smoke to liberate the historical Cervantes from his original context. The dialogue ranges from classic to contemporary, and the actors assume multiple roles. The exciting, non-traditional approach of Quixote is designed to challenge the publicÕs previous perceptions. ÒWe highlight some interesting connections between Cervantes, his work, his times and ours,Ó added Cuk. As a performer, CukÕs portrayal of the title character in Hamlet won raves a couple of years back at the Montreal Fringe. Here as the director of Quixote he continues his tradition of reinventing the classics for 21st century audiences.
